What are the positives and negatives of taking birth control if you intend to remain abstinent?

My mom is taking me to an OBGYN and she says it is highly likely that this is what they will prescribe, i have heard a lot of bad stuff about taking it though. I want to eventually have kids of my own and I am a little phobic about taking medications (building immunities, unnatural things in body, etc...)
