Question about working out/muscles?

Ok, I've recently started working out..But I want to know what I can do to help me gain more muscle faster, I hear stuff about carbs and protein... Whats that about? Like how many carbs is good or protein? ... I also see those big jugs of protein pills for like 30$..How will those help me out? Any tips/advice would be great guys..Thanks in advance=)
