Depends on where you are. There are MEETUP groups for everything here. You search with google and your city and look for Meetup cycling groups or crochet groups or hiking groups. If you like to read book stores with coffe shops are a place people hang out. You can ask about a book if they have one on the table. Of course you can strike up a conversation like that anywhere in a bookstore.
